On October 7th, 2017, Hampton Fire & Rescue kicks off National Fire Prevention Week with the annual Five-Alarm Festival & Chili Cook-Off. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, which started on October 8th, 1871 and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, and destroyed 17,400+ structures. The goal of the festival is to bring awareness to fire and life safety. This admission-free event attracts close to 2,000 Hampton Roads citizens and generates minimal revenue through food/beverage sales which pay for the free attractions. Remaining funds are used to purchase smoke alarms for Hampton citizens. Rain or Shine!
