Eyes & Ears Reporting System

If you work in Coliseum Central, chances are you probably spend the majority of your time here. This means you are probably very familiar with your business neighborhood. That familiarity makes you and your employees the first line of defense when it comes to crime prevention. Coliseum Central has an 'Eyes & Ears' form that you can utilize to report suspicious activity, panhandling and other behavior that is often considered too minor to contact the police department.

With the Eyes & Ears form, you can report your concerns and request police follow-up. By using the Eyes & Ears form , you not only address the immediate concern, but you can help police and the Coliseum Central Business Improvement District spot crime trends BEFORE they become a problem. Forms are available here. Contact our office at 826-6351 if you have any questions.

Hand Up Cards

Panhandlers create a negative image and can be a nuisance for businesses and their customers. No one wants to turn away a person in need, but it can be nearly impossible to tell a truly needy individual from con artists just out to make money. Coliseum Central has 'Hand Up' cards designed to be a quick reference if you find yourself confronted by a panhandler or suspicious person. It contains information about local shelters and organizations who can assist people in need. It also lets you know who to call if you are having trouble with someone who is aggressive toward you or your customers, behaving suspiciously or who simply refuses to leave. Please call Jackie Gibson at 826-6351 if you would like to have the 'Hand Up' cards at your business. If you do see a panhandler in Coliseum Central, please call the non-emergency police number at 727-6111 or call the City of Hampton at 727-8311.

Business Watch

When you opened your doors in Coliseum Central you became a member of the Business Watch Program. Business Watch functions much like the Neighborhood Watch programs you may already be familiar with: "neighbors" keep an eye on each other to help keep their community safe. Member organizations work together and with the Hampton Police Division to reduce crime and the opportunity for crime in the area. Periodic informational seminars and training throughout the year increase awareness and can help prevent your business and your customers from becoming targets for crime. Every member organization receives a window decal identifying them as members of the Business Watch community. For more information about Business Watch or to get your window decal, call Coliseum Central at 826-6351 or the Hampton Police Division Crime Prevention Unit at 727-6574.

CPTED Program

Crime Prevention Though Environmental Design (CPTED) works on the idea that the physical environment and surroundings can have an impact on crime and on the perception of danger. The program will teach you how even small changes to your property can make a big difference. Hampton Crime Prevention Officers will teach you about:

Natural Surveillance:

Combining physical features like lights and walkways with activities and people to maximize visibility.

Natural Access Control:

Carefully locating doorways, fencing, landscaping, and lighting to help guide people to and from your business.

Territorial Reinforcement:

Using fences, art, signs, landscaping and pavement treatments to express ownership.

Maintenance:

Trimming back bushes and branches that reduce visibility, repairing or replacing damaged lights, reinforcing ownership and boundaries though upkeep and grooming.

The CPTED concepts can be applied whether you are constructing a new building or working in an established one. For more information on CPTED or to schedule a consultation call 757-727-6574.

Security Survey Program

Not sure your place of business is as safe as it could be? Let Hampton Police help you spot potential weaknesses before a criminal does. A uniformed officer will meet with you at your business to review the property, including door, windows, locks, lighting, bushes, trees and fences. That officer will then make recommendations for improvements. He or she can even discuss high-tech options with you, like closed circuit video monitoring or automated alarm systems. The recommendations are based upon CPTED principles and can reduce the opportunity for a crime to take place. To request your free security survey, contact the Hampton Police Division Crime Prevention Unit at 727-6574.

Get financial assistance for your security related improvements through Coliseum Central's Security Improvement Grant Program.
